The wedding turned out beautiful, and what better place for a couple to be married then in Sedona.
There was a slight chill in the air, the sky was blue and the sun was shining. The bustle of everyone trying to get dressed at the same time, as the Bride and Groom were a bit late getting there, was, well, shall we say, a bit overwhelming, so this Mother of the Groom/Best Man, stayed out on the terrace with the famous red rocks of Sedona framed against the blue sky and green trees in the background, for a while anyhow.
Finally, the Bride and Groom were dressed and off with the photographer for pictures, which of course, being the mother, I had to trail along and take pictures of my own.
Then it was my turn to get dressed, thankfully the room was way less crowded and as I’m a simple person, I didn’t have a lot of ‘dolling’ up to do, I was ready in about 5 minutes.
We headed for the church; received quick instructions from the man overseeing the ceremony and within just a few short minutes, the Bridesmaids and flower girl were walking up the isle. Then came the bride and her escort, I glanced up at my son, as I was next to him what with being the Best Man and all, his face glowed and his smile reached from ear to ear.
The ceremony lasted less than 10 minutes. More pictures, signing of the legal papers for the Bride, Groom, Best Man (me) and Maid of Honor (Brides daughter), then off too a local Mexican restaurant for dinner. Now, this is where things fell apart for a minute, but with the powers of the mind and the universe watching our backs, it all came together nicely, and so much better than it could have been had what I’m about to tell you not happened.
Upon entering the Mexican restaurant in Tlaquepaque, just a short walking distance from the church, I found a few dour faces and a bit of turmoil. The bride was upset, the groom was gone and they were waiting for tables. Now, just a short note here, we checked out this restaurant when we first visited Tlaquepaque in November, we asked if there’d be a problem with a small wedding party, about 15, give or take on an Thursday evening, or if we could make reservations. They assured us it would not be a problem, but that they don’t take reservations. I also understand my son, the Groom and the man who officiated over the wedding had also talked to them and let them know there would be approximately 14 for dinner.
So, back to the dour faces, I talked to the bride, found out the person, we think was the owner, was quite upset about us coming, but she begrudgingly set up 2 tables for us, which was 2 short of what we actually needed. I talked to her a bit, asked her if there was a problem; she said yes, that she was unaware of the party. I explained about my son calling as well as the man who set the wedding up. She said no one told her anything up until he brought the cake in a few minutes before.
She did allow us to sit, but when 2 more than expected showed up wanting to sit at a table for 2 right next to us, she had a fit, she couldn’t give us another table, what if someone else needed the table. Ok, so our thinking was, she was going to make several hundred dollars from us, and she was worried about a table for 2 for someone who ‘may’ show up. She already had 16 customers, so what was the deal. We all walked out, we didn’t need that rudeness on their wedding day.
Now this is where the powers of the universe was watching our backs. As we walked through the main entrance of the complex, all of us, in all our glorious wedding getups, there was a young man and a middle aged woman manning their posts; they questioned us about the wedding, we explained it was great except for…. and we went into what happened at the Mexican restaurant. They both seemed appalled at the rude behavior of the staff/owner and proceeded to work to sell us on Joey’s Bistro, just a few feet from where we stood. The woman’s close friend managed it, she called her to confirm she had room, told her our story and walked us right on over.
I swear, the Universe was SO looking after us as these people were so good to us, took very good care of us and did everything they could to help make the wedding dinner enjoyable, and the food was Fantastico.
We all came to the same conclusion, we were so much better off at Joey’s than the Mexican restaurant, guess this was were we were supposed to be anyhow.
It’s about 8:30ish pm, it’s quite chilly outside the restaurant in early March in Sedona, we were all exhausted, well fed and happy, but it was time for the long trek back to Phoenix. As I drove myself because I wanted to do more sightseeing along the way and left several hours earlier than the rest, I managed to head out a few minutes before the rest, who were all driving together in the Bride and Grooms 2 large vehicles. I couldn’t wait to get home.
Of course, by the time I got home, I was somewhat rested and decided to check out the pictures on my camera, started re-naming and sorting them. Finally hit the hay about midnight and slept like a baby.
What a great wedding and a great day.
